Biology, the study of life, is the third focus of our program. Unlike most colleges and universities, our biology curriculum examines life through a synthesis of the traditional approaches of the 20th century - cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry, organismal biology, physiology and ecology - together with a more holistic systems sciences perspective. This synthesis of reductionism and holism casts the phenomenon of life in a radically different light than that of 19th and 20th century biology and offers a fascinating, engaging and awe-inspiring new understanding of life at all scales - cells, organisms, ecosystems and Gaia.
These principles and ideas from Gaia theory, systems sciences and biology are grounded in the work of Earth's most prestigious scientists, including Nobel laureates - published in the major scientific journals of our time. Yet they are not available at an introductory level in such an integrated fashion at any other institution of higher education in our region. Some graduate programs about some of principles can be found at some universities, but few undergraduate courses and no programs that are as integrated as ours.
